Clydesdale Western, one of the fancied teams for the championship, started their Premiership season with a home game against Hillhead. It was a backs-to-the-wall game for the visitors who nevertheless managed to keep the score to 1-1 into the second quarter. The hosts came through in the end to a comfortable 5-1 win.
